MDC Environmental Services is proud to serve the Village of Lakewood, a town of quality living in a natural setting of wetlands and recreational lakes. Please see below for information and regulations regarding curbside trash pickup in the Village of Lakewood.

REFUSE, RECYCLING AND YARD WASTE SERVICES: The collection day for your refuse and recyclables will be on Fridays. Yard waste will be collected on Fridays. Please have all refuse, recyclable and yard waste items at the curb by 7:00am on collection day. Billing is included in the Village utility bill. HOLIDAYS: There will be no collection on New Yearʼs Day, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day or whenever the disposal facility is closed. If the following legal holidays fall on a Monday through Friday, refuse collection will be on Saturday. Yard waste collection will be delayed one day if the holidays fall on a Monday or Tuesday.

REFUSE COLLECTION: Household refuse must be placed in the refuse toter. If you regularly have more refuse than will fit in your toter, please contract the Village Hall to make arrangements for a second toter to be delivered. A $4.00 fee will be added to each bi-monthly utility bill for the second toter.

One bulk item such as furniture, fixtures or one roll of carpeting that can be lifted by an individual will be collected each week. Carpeting should be banded and tied in a roll not exceeding four feet in length and two feet in diameter and must weigh less than 50 pounds. Larger bulk items such as large screen televisions, cast iron tubs, water softener tanks or multiple bulk items will require a special collection. See the section on Special Collection for more information. Refuse toters should be left for the new homeowners in the event that you move.

SPECIAL COLLECTION: Appliances including hot water heaters, stoves, ranges, air-conditioners, furnaces, dishwashers, washing machines, clothes dryers, refrigerators and freezers cannot be taken to the landfill. There is an additional charge for pickup of these items. Additional bulk items and construction debris also require a special collection at an additional fee. Please contact our office at (815) 568-7274 one week prior to your pickup day to arrange for pickup of appliances or additional bulk items and construction debris.

YARD WASTE & LEAF COLLECTION: Seasonal collection of yard waste is on Fridays between April 1st and December 7th. Grass cuttings and leaves must be placed in kraft paper bags. Bags are limited to a maximum weight of 50 pounds. Brush and branches must be cut to no more than 4 feet in length and securely bundled with biodegradable rope or twine. Bundles must not exceed two feet in diameter and 50 pounds in weight. Individual branches must not be greater than 3” in diameter.

Up to a total of 4 bags or bundles will be collected each week at no additional charge. A Marengo Disposal yard waste sticker must be attached to all additional bags and/or bundles. Stickers are available at Village Hall. Plastic bags, sod, dirt, rock and stones will not be accepted with yard waste due to compost site regulations.

MDC will provide unlimited leaf pickup at no charge on Fridays in October, November and the first week in December and on two Tuesdays in the spring as designated by the Village. Check your newsletter for exact dates. Leaves may be placed in refuse cans and toters in addition to paper bags during this time only.

DUE TO COMPOST SITE REGULATIONS MATERIAL IN PLASTIC BAGS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.

RECYCLING COLLECTION: Each home will be provided with 1-35 gallon recycling toter for their recyclable items. All recyclables listed below may be placed together in one container.

* Newspaper (and all inserts), Junk Mail

* Magazines, Catalogs, Phone Books

* Office Paper (letterhead, envelopes & window envelopes)

* Chipboard (cereal & tissue boxes, toilet & paper towel rolls, etc.)

* Cardboard (Must fit in recycling container & must be flattened)

* Metal (aluminum, tin/steel and bi-metal food & beverage cans only)

* Glass (bottles and jars) No need to remove labels.

* Plastics Coded 1-7 (Usually located in a triangle on the underside of the bottle or container.)

RINSE ALL JARS, BOTTLES AND CANS — REMOVE TOPS FROM PLASTIC AND GLASS

ITEMS WE DO NOT RECYCLE: tissue, window glass, china/ceramics, mirrors, light bulbs, Pyrex, drinking glasses, styrofoam, plastic bags, oil containers, anti-freeze containers or containers for petroleum products of any kind.

Recycling Containers must be left for the new homeowners in the event that you move!!!
